Holiday Home Renovation – Leisure Isle, Knysna | August 2023

This holiday home renovation project in Leisure Isle, Knysna, was designed for a family who primarily lives in Johannesburg. The home’s location near the beach made it the perfect getaway for the family, and my goal was to create a calm and serene environment where they could relax and enjoy quality time together. The project involved a complete interior transformation, from wallpaper and furniture (both indoor and outdoor) to area rugs, runners, mirrors, linen, throws, and scatter cushions — all with a focus on comfort and low maintenance.

The clients, both lawyers with high-pressure careers, wanted a peaceful retreat away from their busy lives. To achieve this, I worked closely with them to develop a colour story and layout plan that aligned with their vision. Much of our communication was conducted via Zoom and email, allowing me to deliver presentations and concept boards on their visits to the area. They were thrilled with the design direction, particularly appreciating my recommendations for their home.

Custom Furniture & Design Choices

A significant part of this project was creating custom furniture for the communal areas of the home. One key piece was the dining table, which the client was particularly particular about. After exploring various options, including teak sleeper wood, the client ultimately chose a Kiaat table, which perfectly complemented the home’s aesthetic and brought a sense of warmth and luxury.

Practical Design Considerations

Given the house’s proximity to the beach and the family’s lifestyle, we opted for outdoor rugs throughout the home. These practical yet stylish rugs not only contribute to the relaxed vibe of the home but also minimize maintenance — a key consideration for clients who are not always on-site.

As the clients were not residing in the area during the renovation, I also provided project management services, assisting the builder and joinery company when necessary to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

Result

The completed renovation exceeded the client’s expectations, delivering a functional, stylish, and low-maintenancehome that met their needs and lifestyle. The family is now able to enjoy a peaceful haven by the beach, with everything thoughtfully designed for comfort and relaxation.
