Custom Children’s Bedroom Design with Smart Storage Solutions – Dunkeld, Johannesburg

My clients own a beautiful home in a bustling part of Sandton, Johannesburg. They are a family of five and their Custom Children’s Bedroom Design with Smart Storage Solutions

As children grow, their needs and spaces evolve. For this family, it became clear that their daughters’ bedrooms needed a redesign. With school activities increasing and belongings piling up, the rooms lacked organization and sufficient storage. The parents also noticed that the girls weren’t enjoying their rooms and had started sleeping in the main bedroom instead.

The Design Goal

Our goal was to create functional, inviting bedrooms that the girls would love spending time in. Each room needed to offer plenty of built-in storage solutions to help them stay organized, as well as a dedicated area for homework and school projects.

Our Design Approach

We were commissioned to design custom-made bedroom furniture that complemented a table the clients had already purchased. To create a cohesive look, we kept the basic layout and design concept of both bedrooms consistent, while allowing each child to personalize her space through her choice of colour palette, wallpaper, and fabrics—with a little help from their mother and myself.

Custom Furniture and Detailing

The design inspiration came from the unique shape of the legs on the existing table. We carried this element through to the custom bed frames and side tables, maintaining a unified design language. The same colour scheme was applied across all new furniture pieces to create harmony and visual flow.

Floating wall shelves were installed to maximize vertical space and display personal items. Each shelf included small storage boxes for additional organization. Two of the boxes were securely bolted to the wall for extra support. Instead of traditional handles, we used push-latch mechanisms, keeping the design sleek, modern, and child-friendly.

Smart Storage Under the Bed

To optimize every inch of space, we designed two large grey storage boxes for each bedroom. These custom-built units slide neatly under the beds, providing extra storage for soft toys, books, and seasonal items.

Results

The finished bedrooms are bright, organized, and tailored to the girls’ personalities. The combination of custom furniture and clever storage design has created functional spaces that both children enjoy spending time in. The parents are delighted that their daughters now have bedrooms that feel truly their own.
